At the end of last month, hundreds of world leaders in the areas of data and technology participated in the annual conference "Gartner Data & Analytics Summit 2023", in London, for three days. With more than 60 different moments, between talks, panels, and workshops, presented by various industry representatives and Gartner experts, the event included a considerable range of topics, from Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, Data Quality, Data Governance Model, Responsible Use of Data, Data Architecture, the Role of the CDAO (Chief Data & Analytics Officer), Synthetic Data, Data Ecosystems, among several other concepts.

Gartner is a US-based research and advisory firm recognized worldwide for its "Magic Quadrants" - a set of reports and assessments widely used by companies to make strategic decisions, choose business partners and evaluate the best technology solutions available on the market.

The event also featured an exhibition fair with around 100 companies, which naturally included the largest and most well-known - Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, etc. - but also newer players focused on challenges that have only gained scale in recent years, such as Prodago, Informatica, Attacama or Apgar, focused on governance, quality or data management and cataloging.

These days allowed us to dive into the future and shake up the present even more, through the various predictions shared by Gartner experts in different areas:

  • By 2024, the use of synthetic data and transfer learning will halve the amount of real data needed to use machine learning.
  • By 2025, 30% of large companies' outbound marketing messages will be synthetically generated
  • By 2025, 70% of new applications developed in-house will incorporate AI or Machine Learning (ML) based models.
  • By 2025, synthetic data will reduce the collection of personal data from customers, avoiding 70% of penalties for privacy breaches.
  • By 2025, generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT) will account for 10% of all data produced, today it accounts for less than 1%.
  • By 2026, 5% of workers will routinely use AI against their employer's wishes to complete their tasks.
  • By 2026, 20% of leading data science teams will have changed their name to Cognitive Science or Scientific Consulting, increasing the diversity in their people skills by 800%.
  • By 2026, more than 25% of Fortune 500 CDAOs will be responsible for at least one DA-based product that has become a success.
  • By 2027, 30% of manufacturers will be using generative AI to increase efficiency in their product development.
  • By 2027, 80% of marketers will have established a dedicated function to assess the authenticity of content in order to combat misinformation and fake material.

The only certainty at the moment is that we are living through an undeniable technological tipping point. While it is a Herculean challenge to lead with so much uncertainty and disruption, it is essential to accept this reality quickly and follow it closely in order to smooth out the challenges and seize the opportunities.
